Saturday, June 18, 2004 / Santa Clara, CA / stroke play
It was a great turnout at Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club. Despite eminent rain clouds from the North, all players kept their promise to bring their games to the 2005 Summer Open. Weather cleared up and course conditions were decent, Saturday shaped up to be an outstanding golf day. We asked the winners, E-ming Saung (A flight) and Marcus Kong (B flight), about their day on the course.
1) Did you have a personal goal going into the 1st tee box?
ES: I told myself, "Don't duck hook my driver and don't injure my ankle any more than what it already was."
MK: I didn't want to hook the ball off the first tee so I adjusted appropriately and proceeded to slice the ball OB. Nice. A couple holes after that, I just tried to enjoy myself and I began to relax.
2) What was the most memorable moment of the day?
ES: Hitting that first drive off the #1 tee perfectly down the middle of the fairway with a chance to get on in two.
MK: Sinking a birdie putt on #3. After shooting back to back 8's to start off, this got me thinking to take one hole at a time.
3) What was the most challenging part of your round?
ES: I had sprained my ankle the Thursday night before in a soccer game, and I could barely walk on it on Friday. By Saturday, it had gotten better, and I had taken some practice swings at home to make sure that I could still swing, and luckily the swinging didn't irritate my ankle too much. Though it didn't hurt, I definitely tried to make sure I didn't aggravate the injury.
MK: Listening to Jack complain about having a tough round while he was sinking birdies on his way to shooting a 79. :-)
4) If you were to play this round again, what would you change about your game?
ES: I wouldn't change very much except make a few more putts. I made a few mistakes, but overall I was pretty happy with how I played.
MK: I'd want to find a 40 yard shot.
5) What did you think about Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club and the conditions of the course?
ES: This course was not bad for a municipal course. The greens were quick, but not very smooth, so you didn't get a true roll, but it still rolled pretty well.
MK: This was a nice course. It's in pretty good shape for a muni and I wouldn't mind playing here again.
6) What was your "go-to" club that day?
ES: I don't think I had one, but if anything it would have been my 3-iron off the tee as I hit that as my alternative club off the tee, since my driver has been sucking.
MK: My Snake Eyes Quick Strike II 15 degree. I assembled this myself and it's been good to me.

- Odyseey White Hot Putter
